One of the techniques you will learn in Readak involves picking out the key words
in your reading. Read the following passage quickly, focusing your eyes on the bold
words.
................Your natural tendency probably is to read
this page word by word; but try an experiment. Bring your eyes down the page looking only
at the underlined boldface words and ask yourself: Am I reading faster
than I ever thought possible and still understanding
everything I read?
................The method you are trying now
is only one of the techniques of rapid reading. By mastering
them all, you could double, even triple, your
reading speed and at the same time increase your comprehension
and retention. Think how important this would be to you each
day.
................If you read regularly you may
have considered the idea of rapid reading before.
But perhaps you have hesitated because you are not
completely sure of what it involves.
................The Readak course has been
developed over a period of forty years by a panel of reading experts.
The course is taught in the leading schools of the world.
more than 250,000 students have taken it with excellent
results.
................The major goal of the Readak
course is to bring each student up to their best
reading ability. Comprehension and retention are
stressed along with rapid reading. The technique you are
trying here is called key word accentuation. While every word
in the English language is important, some words are more important
than others.
................Examine the following sentence:
It is not necessary to read each and every word
in a sentence or paragraph in order for the reader to
get the complete meaning or sense expressed in the material. The few
words in boldface type say essentially the same thing as
the longer sentences.
................Key word accentuation is one of
many techniques you will learn to improve your reading. All
the Readak skills encourage your eyes and mind
to work together at ever-increasing speeds. They simply won't
let you read too slowly!
................Effort and continued practice
will get the results you are seeking.
