Step 1: Pre-Course Skills Evaluation
Before a Readak course begins, a Readak consultant will normally meet with faculty to review major course goals and specific strategies, as well as answer any questions. That evening the consultant will be available for a parent/student information session. In addition, the Readak teacher arrives at school one week before the start of classes to be available to students and parents, schedule classes, and generally prepare for the start of the course.

Step 2: The Readak Advanced Learning Skills Course
Students learn enhanced note-taking skills, including the Cornell Method, and two organized study systems called SQ3R and HEART, both designed for especially long or difficult textbook assignments. Students learn how to manage their time in addition to learning specific methods aimed at increasing reading rate and comprehension of all types of reading material. The goal is improved comprehension, as well as the practical application of all course strategies.

Each class provides application time. Application and improvement begin immediately with Readak. At the end of each class, students are able to answer four questions:

  1. What did I learn?
  2. How will this new skill help me to become a better student tonight when I do my homework or tomorrow in my regular classes?
  3. How will this new skill help me on a standardized test like the ACT or PSAT/ACT?
  4. How will I apply this in my various subject classes?

For more information on what goes on inside the classroom, please see the Readak Course Outline.

Step 3: Results
Students increase confidence in their own abilities by acquiring advanced learning skills. Students approach academic assignments with a positive attitude, and they have a stronger grasp of what it takes to be a good reader and, specifically, what it takes to continue to improve their own reading skills. Students want to practice their new skills. They first determine the purpose of each assignment; they understand which skills(s) to apply; and they know how to use those skills to improve comprehension. Students appreciate the time saved and the confidence that comes from a job well done.

Step 4: Optional Refresher Course
Following the completion of the Readak Advanced Learning Skills course, students receive a certificate entitling them to take the entire course again at no additional charge.
