1. Who should take the course?
Students in Grades 5-12 who are enrolled at a host school and want to become better
readers and students, learn to study more efficiently, and take a giant step toward
reaching their academic potential.
2. When are classes offered?
A typical Readak schedule at a host school provides many options.
- Monday-Friday before school, 50 minutes per class
- Monday and Wednesday after school, 2 hours per class
- Tuesday and Thursday after school, 2 hours per class
- Saturday mornings, 3 hours and 20 minutes hours per class
- Monday-Friday during study halls
- In some cases, evening and weekend classes are available, especially in boarding schools
3. How long does the course last?
Course length is generally 12-20 hours over three to five weeks, depending on the course
option offered at the host school.
4. How will Readak help me?
As a student, you are required and expected to read and study many different types of
material, not all of which may easily hold your attention. In fact, you will often be
faced with challenging reading and study assignments as you progress from elementary
school to junior high school to high school, and even college. SQ3R, a popular
well-established study system, and HEART, a newer study system, are particularly helpful
when you are faced with long and/or difficult assignments. Studies have shown that
students who use such methods when they read textbooks learn more. Readak will also give
you note-taking techniques such as the Cornell method (click here
for Free Cornell Notes Pages) and mapping that will be crucial in your future. You may
find you know more about these approaches than you think, but may know them by other
names.
For more information on the topics covered in the course, please see the Readak Course Outline.
5. Will I receive a grade for the course?
No. The Readak Advanced Learning Skills course will not be a part of your permanent
academic record. The course focuses on helping you perform better in your regular classes
and is designed to complement what your teachers are doing in each subject.
6. Does Readak assign homework or tests?
No. The course will not add to your workload. To the contrary, it will enhance your
learning time.
7. Why not do all my work the same way?
Easy: each subject you take, each outline you write, and each test you take are all
different. They must be prepared, read, and finished differently.
8. Why not be satisfied with your abilities, grades, and outlook as they are?
Think about it: even if you are tops in your class, the day will come when you simply must
be better prepared to handle much more work. Your attitude about school work will become
more focused. You will be prepared to handle the educational challenges you will face. If
you are a good athlete, why would you go to a sports camp? The reason is evident and
applies to a Readak course as well--to improve your skills.
9. What do other students say about Readak?
Nearly all students who complete an evaluation of the course would recommend it to a
friend. For more, please see Student Comments.
10. Does Readak guarantee improvement?
Like any of your teachers, we cannot guarantee improvement; however, experience shows that
most students who go to class and apply what they learn perform better in school. This
same approach works in Readak classes.
11. How much does the course cost?
